                    Searching Scopus

  What is Scopus?
   > A database covering the scientific, technical, medical and social sciences literature
   > 14,200 peer-reviewed titles from over 4,000 international publishers including 531 “Open Access” journals
   > More than 60% of titles are from countries other than the US
   > Abstracts go back to 1966
   > Links to full-text via “Article Linker” when Library subscribes to electronic journal
  > "Cited By" information indicating the number of times an article has been cited

  Searching Scopus
    Basic Search
Enter search terms into the two available search boxes
If both boxes are used select the appropriate Boolean operator connecting the terms (AND, OR, AND NOT)
Select the field you wish to search:
     > Activate the dropdowns next to the search boxes to select the field you wish to search (default fields are for: article title, abstracts, and keywords)
Select limits, if you wish, for: Date Range, Document Type, and Subject Area
    Click on “Search”

    Advanced Search
In the Advanced Search, you can enter a query directly in the text box. Use command line searching with Boolean operators (AND, OR, AND NOT).
       Example:
     > (lyme disease OR borrelia burgdorferi) AND vaccine
     > In the above search, since no fields were specified, all fields will be searched for either the term lyme disease or the term borrelia burgdorferi, and for the term vaccine
    Field Searching
Field Searching can be incorporated as well into the query (a list of fields is available in Scopus)
       Example:
    > (TITLE (lyme disease) OR TITLE (borrelia burgdorferi)) AND TITLE-ABS-KEY (vaccine)
    > In the above search the title field is searched for either the term lyme disease or the term borrelia burgdorferi; and the title, abstract or key words fields are searched for vaccine.
Year range can be searched for using the operators:
    > BEF –Before
    > Aft – After
    > IS – Is equal to
       Example:
     > (TITLE (lyme disease) OR TITLE (borrelia burgdorferi)) AND TITLE-ABS-KEY (vaccine) AND PUBYEAR AFT 1999

    Author Search
This search option is only for finding articles by a particular author.
In the Last Name search box type in the author’s last name. Entering an author’s initials or first name in the Initials or First Name search box is optional.
If only the last name is entered, and a search executed, a list of all the spelling variations that matched the author’s last name will be presented along with the number of documents attributed to each.
To review the documents for any one or more of the authors, select the particular author.
    Document Citation Overview
An author (or group of authors) documents can be displayed along with the number of times they are cited in a specified period of time.
Note: the author field can also be searched in both the Basic and Advanced search options.

  Search Results
Once a search has been executed, a history of that search and the option of again accessing the results is available.
To see the history of your searches, you must either be on the “Basic Search” or “Advanced Search” page; at the bottom of the page your search history will be listed.

    Working with Results
Search Results can be sorted by: Publication date, document Relevance, first author, source title, number of time cited
Results from a search can be refined in a number of ways:
     > By conducting a search of the results
     > By “Limiting” results to, or “Excluding” from results, each of the following fields (a complete listing, from the results, of each field is provided): Source Title, Author names, Publication Year, Document Type, and Subject Area

    Results can be:
    > Printed
    > Saved to disk
    > Emailed
    > Added to “My List” -- a specific area for saving and managing selected references in different ways, including the ability to create a bibliography in a variety of standard formats or create a Citation Overview.
    > Exported to bibliographic management software -- such as RefWorks, EndNote and Reference Manager
    > Viewed in a different format -- for example, with the abstract, or a complete record with references and keywords
    > Linked to the full-text -- when the full-text of the article is available

  Special Features
  Register For a Scopus Account
When you register for an account with Scopus the following options become available under "My Profile" to you:
    My Alerts
     > Search Alerts
After a search has been executed it can be saved as a “Search Alert” and automatically run at a selected frequency: Daily, Weekly, and Monthly. The Alert notifies you by e-mail of newly loaded documents in Scopus that match the search.
     > Document Citation Alerts
When you set a Document Citation Alert you will receive an e-mail each time that document is cited in Scopus

    My Saved Searches
After a search has been executed it can be saved and run in the future for all results or for only the most recent results from when it was last run. After saving a search it can be access in “My Profile”

    My Saved Lists
My List page displays a group of temporary lists containing documents from previous Search Results. The documents that you have placed within My List may be refined in a similar fashion as done with a set of Search Results.
From these documents you can also create a bibliography in a variety of standard formats or create a Citation Overview

    RefWorks Settings
You can enter your RefWorks user information in Scopus. This will enable the following:
     > The icon will show which Scopus documents are stored in your RefWorks database
     > Scopus will automatically log you in when you export documents to RefWorks (may work only when you are accessing from campus).
