- 37 full-text Reference Books
- 47 full-text peer-reviewed medical Journals
- Over 500 PracticeGuidelines
- 39 Year Books
- Drug information
- Patient Informaiton
Getting Started
Access to MD Consult is via the Library’s Database Page. If you are off campus, you must log on using your library barcode in order to gain access to MD Consult. See these Instructions for Remote Access for information re remote access and obtaining a barcode.
Basic Searching
One of the most popular ways to use MD Consult is to search across all of the content at one time. This can be a good way to get a feel for what's out there across the whole spectrum of resources, but you lose some of the search features available when searching individual collections.
To search, use the New Search button near the upper right of the screen (after you log in). You will be presented with a pop-up search box in which you can enter your search terms, and are given the option to search within certain collections of MD Consult -- Reference Books, Journals, etc. -- or to search across all collections at once.
Take advantage of the Boolean operators -- AND, OR, and NOT -- to construct your search.
If your search is more complex, click on "More Search Options" for more query boxes. This feature is most relevant if you are searching a particular collection as it customizes the form based on the collection being searched.
Truncation. MD Consult uses the * to replace any number of characters at the end or in the middle of a word. The ? is used to replace just one character at the end or in the middle of a word.
Navigating the Content
Once you've logged in you will have several tabs across the top of your screen including:
- Clinical Knowledge
- News & Reports
- Patient Handouts
- Professional Services
Each of these will be more fully described below. Note that in the middle of the screen, you will see that day's highlighted content -- top health/medicine news stories, etc.
Clinical Knowledge
This is the section that contains the Reference Books, Journals, Practice Guidelines and Drug Information.
Reference Books
There are 37 reference books in MD Consult. To go to the list online, click on the Clinical Knowledge tab, then click on Reference Books. You can browse the content of each title individually. Or you can search across all titles by using the search feature as described above. If you want to limit just to books, click on "New Search" and in "Search within", select Reference Books.
