Health Sciences Library Plan for Services, FY2008

Goal I Assure that all university-wide constituents have access to pertinent information and educational media when needed
Objective 1 Provide access to resources 24/7 and be operational 99% of the time (except for routine maintenance)
a. Create improved communication mechanisms to orient/educate the NYMC academic departments and user communities regarding available informational resources and capabilities (90)
b. Expand marketing of special membership benefits
c. Investigate the feasibility of a "Friends of the Library" program
d. Complete shift of the monographic collections and deleting remote storage items
e. Register 2/3 (877) of the eligible NYMC-sponsored residents for library access
f. Complete user database clean-up and renewals
g. Investigate further collaborations with affiliate libraries to best provide access by faculty and residents at more remote locations
Objective 2 Fill no fewer than 90 percent of requests for document delivery (interlibrary loans and photocopy) services within the time frame specified by users.
a. Provide no less than 45% of all documents to NYMC requestors electronically
b. Investigate use of iFax system to convert faxes to electronic formats for users
Objective 3 Fill no fewer than 85 percent of Valhalla campus requests for educational media within the time frame required by requestors.
a. Expand DVD transfer and duplicating services
b. Integrate podcasting services and appropriate teaching or training
Objective 4 Provide library website that meets all qualitative standards
a. Complete redesign of the Library’s website, incorporating new standards and templates, and updating all pages
b. Conduct usability testing on elements of the new website
Objective 5 Complete process to select and implement an upgraded online public access catalog (OPAC) which provides effective linkages and integrated database searching
a. Complete "Request for Information" process for new/upgraded Online catalog
b. Explore federated search options, select and implement software
Objective 6 Provide quality library facility that meets all of the needs of the users (e.g. improve air quality, study tables, and chairs, signage, and special collections room)
a. Identify funding for special collections room renovation (lower level)
b. Implement touch-screen monitor for calendar software
c. Improve air flow throughout lower level and in group study room
d. Complete a plan to optimize use of the PC lab and Media Library
Objective 7 Ensure effective supervision, management and standards are in place (35)
a. Provide cross training among appropriate staff and departments
b. Establish regular meeting schedules for public service units
c. To increase by 20% the level of unrestricted funds for the HSL (33)
Objective 8 To complete a HSL strategic plan for 2009-2014
a. Complete communications training plan for staff
b. Communicate the value of the HSL plan to all users
c. Develop an overall assessment plan
Goal II Support university-wide efforts to prepare students to become independent, self-directed learners by providing qualitative library resources and data services for curriculum support and life-long learning
Objective 1 Ensure that university-wide curriculum requirements are incorporated into the library’s planning process
a. Assist efforts to help students meet core competencies and educational objectives enabling them to contribute to the health of their communities (70,24)
b. Assist users to demonstrate the ability to critically review the scientific literature for knowledge and findings relevant to a specific issue or question, which includes the ability to use modern library information retrieval systems (66)
c. Participate in LCME accreditation process
d. Meet the requirements for emerging university doctoral programs including Health Policy and Management and Behavioral Sciences and Health Promotion.
e. Publish 14th annual faculty author bibliography (106)
Objective 2 Develop innovative educational programs that support medical education throughout all three schools
a. Complete content management and editorial functions in the DCDB
b. Expand implementation of the image repository database (ContentDM)
c. Expand electronic archiving of NYMC publications (e.g. theses)
d. Investigate the need/feasibility for new classes (e.g. PhotoShop, Web 2.0, Excel, etc.)
e. Leverage the energy from previous funded projects to partner with other organizations in the region
Objective 3 Annually assess the accuracy, currency and comprehensiveness of the library databases and collections
a. Complete a special project to assess Serhold and OCLC records
Objective 4 Ensure that users are satisfied with library services and resources
a. Results related to library resources on graduation survey data will be above average (105)
b. Assess communications and access with affiliated clinical locations (28)
